Stop Sharing Your Post to Your Story With “New Post”

You post a Reel. Then you share it to your Story with a little "new post 👀" sticker and hope it gets a boost.

It won't. And that's not a guess.

Instagram's head said it directly

Adam Mosseri, who runs Instagram, has said that sharing your own feed post to your Story won't meaningfully change its overall reach. The feed already reaches more people than Stories do, partly because feed posts can be recommended to people who don't follow you yet. Stories mostly reach the people who already follow you.

So resharing isn't a reach hack. It's just a reminder for people who might already have seen it.

So what are Stories for?

Here's the mindset shift: the feed is for growth. Stories are for the followers you already have.

Stories are where you connect with and take care of the people who already found you. That matters more than it sounds. Mosseri has also said that creators who post to Stories often see fewer unfollows than creators who don't.

New followers come from your feed. Loyal followers come from your Stories.

If you're going to share your post, do it right

Don't just say "new post." Give people an actual reason to tap:

  • Add context. "I wish someone had told me this before I opened my studio."

  • Ask a question. Use a poll: "Do you film your content yourself? Yes / Not yet."

  • Drop one quick takeaway. Give them the best line from the post, so the tap feels worth it.

5 Story ideas that build loyalty

  1. Behind the scenes of your day or your work.

  2. A poll or question sticker about a real problem your clients have.

  3. A client win or a kind message (with permission).

  4. A quick tip that's too short for a full post.

  5. A sneak peek of something you're launching.

Real talk

Stop judging your Stories by views. Judge them by replies, poll taps, and DMs. Those are the people who are paying attention, and they're the ones most likely to buy from you.
